Hawkfish (Cirrhitidae)

Hawkfish Family Characteristics:

Despite their attractive appearance and friendliness, Hawfish are predators - albeit of small prey. They rest or 'perch' on a piece of coral and wait for small prey food to pass by so they can dash out and seize it. Reproduction in these fishes is by demersal eggs, the eggs are laid and fertilized on a firm surface, where they subsequently hatch. There are nine genera of Hawkfish including 32 species, most of which are not commonly kept in the aquarium. The largest species described has a maximum length of 22in.

Diet And Feeding:

In the wild, hawkfish will take small invertebrates like shrimps and smaller fishes. In the aquarium, provide live foods and suitable meaty frozen foods.

Aquarium Behavior:

Hawkfish will appreciate plenty of perching places in the aquarium such as rockwork. Despite their predatory nature, they appear not to harm sedentary invertebrates such as tubeworms, soft corals, etc.
